AHMEDABAD: In his most personal renditions ever, city-based artist Ronak Sopariwala has poured out on canvas all his inhibitions and apprehensions as an artist. The lonely and quiet life that artists lead has been given expression at a solo show of paintings by Sopariwala presented at Hutheesing Visual Art Centre by The Smart Art Hub.
Titled 'Ronak', the seven paintings on display are part of a collection in preview of his show in Delhi next month at the India Habitat Centre.
The exhibition is on till Wednesday.
"Cosimo de' Medici once said - Ogni pittore dipinge sé - which means 'every painter paints himself' and I have always believed that no subject, other than the self, comes even close to getting complete justice on canvas," said Sopariwala. "This collection displays the constant flux that an artist's mind is in and even though I almost always paint my inner thoughts, this is by far my most private work. It combines my fears of stagnation, my frustrations from being suffocated at times, being burdened by people's expectations and my desires for a family and a studio of my own."
Each of the 90x66inch acrylics on canvas feature the symbolic cloud which depicts Sopariwala in his environment: whether it is the rabbit trapped within four walls staring at the darkening cloud, or the tied-down cloud inside a human brain being dragged out of its misery or even the massive 176x66inch garden of thoughts and ideas which shows how when one is working under a superior, his/her own creativity often gets trampled.
"The vehicles in the paintings - the ship, the submarine and the car - are carriers of both positive and negative thoughts. They're either pulling me out of my desolation and monotony or carrying away the saddle that keeps me bogged down," said Sopariwala.
